The LNR and Trent foundation schools want all foundation trainees to adopt a proactive approach to careers management. We want your foundation training experience here in the East Midlands to provide you with sufficient opportunities to actively consider your specialty training career preferences.

To support you in this the two foundation schools have made the following resources available to all F1 doctors:

  • Funded place on the Your Career, Your Life, Your Direction course

Further details about the careers course can be found on the HEE Careers page along with an abundance of information to support you in planning your specialty training career as well as information about the HEE one to one careers support.

Medical careers website

The Medical Careers website contains a wealth of helpful information on planning your medical career. It includes detailed specialty information, a four-step career planning tool to help you understand your options, a guide to making the most of foundation training plus video case studies.

Competition ratios for specialty recruitment

These websites (EnglandWalesScotland and Northern Ireland) show detailed competition data across the UK. However, when using competition ratio data, you should always bear in mind that:

  1. Previous years’ application figures are not always an accurate indicator of future patterns.
  2. Healthcare is changing rapidly and is increasingly being delivered in a community setting. Around half of all training posts in the next few years will be in General Practice, whereas the number of training posts in some specialties such as surgery is decreasing.
  3. Competition ratios vary considerably by specialty and location, with some being much more competitive than others.

This useful interactive tool illustrates the links between different stages in the medical career pathway. It has been produced by the Wales Deanery but is relevant to, and can be accessed by, anyone in the UK.
